Fullerton College photography teacher, Al De Vito wants to capture the moment. But this is one teacher you won't just find in the classroom or roaming the halls. It is very likely you could run into him at the local art gallery. In fact, you may even find him hosting his own exhibit.

Such is the case currently. De Vito's latest exhibit is now on display at the Steamers Cafe in Fullerton through September 28.

De Vito has taught in the North Orange County Community College District for 30 years and currently teaches photography at FC. He won his first art contest at the age of six and received his first camera at 12.

De Vito began to take a serious interest in photography in his teen years and in high school, he decided to make a career of it. Realizing a beginning photographer was not going to become wealthy overnight, De Vito set his sights on teaching.

"A photography teacher I had in high school was so bad, I was determined to become a good teacher," he said.

De Vito rightfully serves as an inspiration to his many students, having attended prestigious art schools such as The Brooks Institute and Philadelphia Museum College of Art.

Amazingly, he was accepted to the acclaimed Art Center on his first try.

"I had less than six weeks to put a portfolio together to get into art school...I didn't even know what a portfolio was, let alone how to put one together," he said.

He has studied with highly respected photographers Ansel Adams and Cole Weston. De Vito admits that working with his contemporaries gave him a whole new outlook on how they see and interpret.

De Vito said his greatest accomplishment is "being able to put on a show and have people comment and appreciated what I'm doing."

Aside from the exhibit now at Steamers, De Vito's work is also on display at the Village Arts Gallery in Fullerton.

Currently, he is also putting the finishing touches on an exhibit that will be on display in April 1997.
